This is the current game plan for ELMS development and deployment to the Drupal community. The first two modules that will be released are applicable to any Drupal site where as the Container Designer and associated theme and profile are directed at the e-learning community at large though I'm sure a lot of sites could benefit from the ideas in them.
- Outline Designer - Books Ajax'ed sends the Drupal learning curve through the floor. End-users and web publishers a like will be able to kick out website structures, proof of concepts, and blogish content with little to no clue how to navigate Drupal. Just point them to one link and most of the operations they'll likely want to perform will be available to them in a simple to use drag-and-drop / right-click interface. It's compliant across IE, Safari, and Firefox (tested) though all modern browsers should be able to handle it.
- Static Publisher - A module that allows you to take your Drupal site and publish it out to the static view of anonymous users and downloadable via a zip file. Why? Some content doesn't need to be viewed in a dynamic form and regardless of how efficient caching is, it's never going to beat out the efficiency of HTML content. You can also take your Drupal content, zip it up and display it offline to users / students for presentations or meetings.
- Container Designer (tentative name) - Hate having to go through your course and flush out date specific items every semester? Want an easy way to manage all those dates and have them linked to content automatically? Look no further! The Container Designer looks to solve this annoying instructional design issue that has plagued dream weaver and other development applications for years. Simply associate a duration to the highest container of instructional material (Unit, Week, Lesson, Module, you name it) then plug in the start date and let it manage the rest. Why build out a syllabus of dates in a PDF and have students reference back and forth when you can build the dates right into the flow of instruction? Also opens up the door for Container specific banners, images, colors and more!
- Templated Themes - Need a proof of concept for a course website done quickly? Why spend the time designing a new theme or using one that doesn't quite fit your needs when a color module enabled theme geared towards education can get you most of the way there? Throw in the content with the outline designer and watch the themes build out their own navigation with some quick customization options for color, naming / number conventions and pagination. Why spend months putting together a p.o.c. when you need to sell a staff member on e-learning in a week (or less!)?
- ELMS profile - The big picture finally realized. ELMS is an installation profile that includes the following four modules as well as some others like Token, Path auto, TinyMCE, CCK, and Views activated. These modules (and module enabled theme) will all make up the core of ELMS and provide even non-technical users a simple way to install and jump into the publishing of educational materials. Starting off with the Container Designer, then building off of it with the Outline Designer, going into the selection of which templated instructional theme to use with the custom Templated Themes, and then having the option to dump all content out to a zip file. These modules will lay the framework for a rapid prototyping revolution in e-learning not only at the e-Learning Institute but a campus near you! Don't have the technical infrastructure to house Drupal on your webserver? Get your central IT unit to install ELMS then build out your course and export it to HTML to place on your scaled down webserver! Unlock the true potential of your instructional design team by having them focus less on HTML and more on what they do best: INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN!
