Icon Progress - Key Concepts

For the past couple weeks, I have been working with a team of fellow designers to develop icons for elearning's introduction videos.

These icons will be used to highlight a specific phrase or word that will be a key concept or idea in the video.

I wanted to incorporate some comic book styles into the video, while maintaining a sense of unique design.

As you can see, a few of my ideas were pretty generic word and thought balloons that are pretty standard to modern comics.

The second and third revisions were starting to get pretty interesting and different.  However, they did not make the final revision because they did not present the key concept very well, and look more like map pointers.

My final revision is the black thought balloon with white Futura text.  I liked how the idea text is highlighted, the style is still from comic books, and it is a fresh take on a common comic book element.

Mike Collins said he was starting to get sick of seeing Helvetica Neue.  So I searched sans serif font styles to match our eLearning website and previous projects. I suggested Futura to keep a cohesive typography style, while still keeping it fresh and interesting.

Design Process

I'm always a fan of seeing the design process in it's raw form -- as you show it here. I learn so much watching the final design materialize. I like the 4th one down.
