Teaching Diversity Through Dance:  A Report on the Development and Implementation of a Hybrid Course in Dance Appreciation at Penn State University

Assistant Professor, Michele Dunleavy; e-Learning Institute Director, Keith Bailey; and Instructional Designer, Megan Marut gave a join presentation in Honolulu, HI on a newly created course known as Dance 100: Dance Appreciation.  Dance is explored as vital, communicative, and performing art, one that reflects social values and cultural beliefs.  The curriculum includes an introduction to the culture and dance forms of Asia, Africa and the Diaspora, and the Western theatrical forms of ballet and modern dance.  Students enrolled in the course access an e-text via an online course management system where they also view video clips of various dance forms, participate in threaded discussions, take quizzes, and complete assignments.  Students also meet once a week to physically engage in the course materials through participation in master classes and lecture demonstrations.  This combination of pedagogical methods aims to stimulate the student both intellectually and kinesthetically, resulting in a greater awareness, understanding, and respect for diversity.

The presentation will focus on the following areas:

  • Overall course design, including the use of technology to capture, upload and stream video
  • Dissemination of the results of a student survey designed to assess the effectiveness of the hybrid model
